Objective

The student will understand the basic concepts of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. He/she will also understand the basics of wave motion and the importance of the wave in different processes. He/she will be able to perform measurements involving heat or waves and understand their theory.
The student can already form a general picture of physics as a science.

Content

Basic concepts of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Vibration. Sound and acoustics. Waves. Reflection and refraction of waves, interference. Sound. Areas of physics: Their development and relationships.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

-Understands that the properties of matter are determined by atoms
-Understands the basic concepts of heat
-Understands the idea of the kinetic theory of gases
-Can solve simple problems of heat and waves

Assessment criteria, good (3)

-Can solve different problems of heat and waves

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

-Can use the concepts in order to identify the concepts needed in concrete problems and solve them

Further information

Course contains laboratory experiments. Good performance in laboratory rises the degree by one and minimal performance lowers the degree by one step.
