Fluid Flow and BalancesLaajuus (6 ECTS)

Course unit code: TO00AA45

General information

Credits
6 ECTS

Objective

After completion of this course the student knows how to apply basic equations of fluid flow. The student will be familiar with the flow dimensioning of pipes and the main principles in selecting valves and fittings. The student has the knowledge of most common pumps in order to dimension them. The student will be able to form mass and energy balances and solve them with using values from tables.
-----
After completion of this course the student will be able to dimension piping, select and dimension an appropriate pump for a certain flow problem. The student knows how to dimension compressors and vacuum systems and can apply the calculation of balances for practical problems in chemical engineering.

Content

Fundamental principles of fluid flow, equations of continuity and energy balances and their applications, dimensionless numbers and similarity, flow profiles in pipes, pressure drop of incompressible, newtonian flow, pumps, pipes, vessels, valves and fittings, basic concepts of compression and vacuum technology, after-treatment of compressed air, mass and energy balances and searching of values needed in calculations
-----
Non-newtonian fluids, pressure drop in non-newtonian, compressible and channel flows, equations of velocity distributions in pipes, flow past immersed bodies, manufacturing and joints of pipes, gaskets of pumps, flow and PI diagrams and standards in them, use of dimensioning programs to solve fluid flow problems
