Descriptions
Modern well being relies heavily on the use of machinery and equipment. Mechanical engineering job prospects are good in Finland, because business is good and a great number of engineers will be retiring in the next few years. Mechanical engineering is based of high technology and expertise, which means that people working in the field are able to develop themselves and work in an interesting and ever-developing environment.
The aims of education
Mechanical engineering program aims to give students good means to work in jobs related to mechanical and material engineering systems, components or materials, design, manufacture, or purchase and sales activities. The studies are related to a wide range of planning exercises, projects and laboratory exercises.
The degree programme is divided into the following specialisation options:
- Energy and Environmental Engineering
- Machine Automation
- Production Engineering
- Machine Design Engineering
Energy and Environmental Engineering
The energy and environmental engineering sector is becoming a more and more important part of society and its development, and expertise in the field hinges on a suitable combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills and continuous on-the-job learning. The field requires an understanding of not only mechanical engineering but also environmental engineering, control engineering, electrical engineering, operational economy and safety issues. Further skills valued in the energy sector include language and computer skills and international study and work experience.
Career opportunities
Energy and environmental engineers are typically employed as designers, operating engineers or maintenance engineers for motor and boiler manufacturers, but are also engaged in environmental protection, marketing, control and maintenance. Graduates are usually employed by companies or organisations in the energy sector, such as power plants or electricity or district heating companies.
Machine Automation
Machine Automation is a quickly developing field, with new techniques and equipment solutions springing up regularly, which makes the field both interesting and challenging.
Machine automation training gives students the capacity to work in industry, designing and programming automatic operations and production systems and working with the mobile hydraulics of mobile machinery, such as cranes and forklifts. Students specialise in either machine design or control technology, with an integral part of the studies consisting of practical work in the machine department laboratory and joint projects with industry partners and practical exercises laying the foundation for future work duties.
Career opportunities
The comprehensive training will provide machine automation engineers with a good springboard to work in industry as a designer or a project or production engineer. Possible career paths also include sales and marketing jobs and various specialist posts in projects both in Finland and abroad.
Machine Design Engineering
During their studies, Machine Design Engineering students will learn how to take customer needs into consideration in the design of innovative, user-friendly and environmentally friendly products that are also easy to manufacture, and to manage product development projects. The training forms a solid foundation for different aspects of mechanical engineering businesses, such as design, computer-aided simulation and sales work.
The job description of machine design engineers consists of solving construction problems, requiring not only creativity, initiative and ability for teamwork but also a deep understanding of specific areas of machine construction.
Production Engineering
Production Engineering students will learn to understand that production is one of the key economic processes in a company. Production engineers can design and manage product manufacture, being aware of modern production methods and good at managing the people involved in the production.
Career prospects
Production engineers work in industry in various production design and management posts and as production team supervisors.
Development
