Objective
The student can determine stresses and deflections of structures, and design simple structures. The student is familiar with the basics of stability analysis.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student can determine stresses and angles of twist of circular bars in torsion.
The student can calculate deflections of statically determinate beams using tables.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student can determine stress elements in plane stress and calculate the principal stresses. The student knows how to use failure theories.
The student is familiar with the Euler theory of buckling and knows how to design columns using allowable stresses.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student knows how to analyze statically indeterminate beams.
