Objective
The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge in R&D process, especially in its early stages. The course is a direct continuation to Product Development course. Topics such as creation of product portfolio, management of product range, PDM (Product Data Management) and links to the enterprise strategy are in focus.
Content
The course has an emphasis on R&D process’s early stages: product idea creation and conceptual design. Several innovation methods are introduced and a systematic approach to process an idea to a concrete product is taught. Case examples in industry are discussed, tool used in R&D process are practiced and a project in the subject is included in the course.
The themes that are in focus are:
- Conceptual Design
- Product and Portfolio Strategy
- Innovation Processes
- User-proximity and technical market research
- Future anticipation in Conceptual Design
- Product Data Management PDM
CATIA’s SmartTeam module is introduced.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The grading consists of two parts:
- theoretical knowledge and
- project, in which the learned material is applied.
The student comprehends 50% of the theory described in the previous Content section and is able to carry out the industrial case project with minimum requirements set by the case initiator.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The grading consists of two parts:
- theoretical knowledge and
- project, in which the learned material is applied.
The student comprehends 75% of the theory described in the previous Content section and he/she is able to carry out the industrial case project with:
- satisfactory end product/concept,
- used systematic approach in R&D process
- proper documentation and
- usability of the end product/concept satisfactory/good
The usage of the learned procedures and tools in project work can clearly be observed.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The grading consists of two parts:
- theoretical knowledge and
- project, in which the learned material is applied.
The student comprehends 90% of the theory described in the previous Content section and he/she is able to carry out the industrial case project with:
- excellent end product/concept,
- used correctly systematic approach in R&D process
- documentation excellent and technical details described by 3D
- usability of the end product/concept in the company’s process immediate
The usage of the learned procedures and tools in the project work 100% and utilized CATIA’s SmartTEam module.
