Objective

The student is familiar with the physical quantities and basic models used in kinematics. She or he can resolve simple one dimensional and circular motion equations.
The student understands the meaning of basic quantities in dynamics (force, linear momentum, energy, work and power) and is able to apply the most important laws in dynamics (Newton laws, impulse principle, conservation of mechanical energy) in simple mechanical systems.

Content

1. One and two dimensional motion.
2. Dynamics of rigid object.
3. Kinematics of circular motion and the law of gravitation.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student can use the kinematic relations in simple one-dimensional applications.
2. The student recognizes different types of force and can draw simple free body diagrams.
3. The student can calculate the acceleration in circular motion and can resolve problems including uniform circular motion.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can apply one dimensional motion equations in systems including different types of motion.
2. The student can apply Newton’s laws of motion and the mechanical energy principle in simple dynamical systems.
3. The student can resolve problems including nonuniform circular motion and understands the relation between circular motion and the law of gravitation.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student is able to apply the motion equations also in two dimensional cases.
2. The student can resolve problems requiring application of both kinematic and dynamic relations in the same system.
3. The student can apply the law of gravitation in the circular motion of planets and satellites.
