Objective

After completing this course, the student will be able to:
- choose and dimension chain gears, vee belt gears, gearing systems, clutches and brakes
- define efficiencies of transmission devices and choose appropriate electric motors for the gears
- Apply belt tension principles, to design belt conveyors, for example
- dimension the most common gaskets
- know about the lifespan of mechanical parts

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Solves basic cases correctly. Can choose the appropriate gear and electric motor when rotation speed and moment of load are known. Considers efficiency of transmission devices.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Can apply basic knowledge more broadly and calculate examples with considerable load variation.
e. g. can calculate loads during start up of an electric motor and define start up times in relation to the load.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can also apply knowledge from other fields and uses own judgement when assessing examples which cannot be calculated exactly (e.g. statically indeterminate problems)
