Objective
On completion of the course the student will be able to compose basic documents in his or her field using different communication channels, to apply Finnish language usage recommendations to documents in his or her field, to locate and use information in his or her field, to give oral and written presentations with confidence and expertise adapting to the situation, to act purposefully as a group member and to assess and develop his or her communication competence.
Content
Formal texts, document layout and essential documents, for example job application documents and business letters. Basics of reporting and report as a genre: structure, language, use of source material, paraphrasing, documenting references in the text, illustration of information, and layout. Use of Finnish and writing conventions in technical texts, especially abbreviations, inflection of foreign loan words, lists, numbers and symbols. Locating relevant source material and critical use of information sources in the field. Basics of online communication. Oral communication and interaction: presentation and speaking skills, planning, illustrating and delivering an oral presentation, and persuasive language usage. Basics of group communication.

Composing basic documents in one’s field and applying Finnish language usage recommendations
- The student is able to compose understandable texts following given instructions and models.
Acquisition and use of information
- The student is able to locate information in his or her field as instructed and use it in his or her output.
Oral presentation skills and acting as a group member
- The student participates in presentation and interaction situations.
Assessment and development of communication skills
- The student receives and gives feedback.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Composing basic documents in one’s field and applying Finnish language usage recommendations
- The student is able to adopt texts in accordance with the receiver and the situation and write fluent Finnish mostly following the Finnish language usage recommendations.
Acquisition and use of information
- The student is able to locate relevant information in his or her field and critically select and incorporate it into his or her own texts.
Oral presentation skills and acting as a group member
- The student is able to communicate in an illustrative and interesting way as an expert in his or her field and use visual aids with skill.
Assessment and development of communication skills
- The student is able to assess his or her own and others’ communication and propose development objectives for communication.

Composing basic documents in the student’s field and applying Finnish language usage recommendations
- The student is able to write revised texts in his or her field showing expertise and proficiency.
Acquisition and use of information
- The student is able to locate information in his or her field in a varied and independent way and evaluate and compare the information from different sources.
Oral presentation skills and acting as a group member
- The student is able to communicate persuasively and effectively as an expert in his or her field.
Assessment and development of communication skills
- The student is willing and able to develop his or her communication skills as part of his or her expertise and give feedback from various perspectives.
