Objective

The student knows the theoretical background of the finite element method.
The student can solve displacements and stresses in different types of structures using a finite element program.

- Shape functions for bar and beam elements
- Stiffness matrices for bars and beams
- System equations
- Consistent nodal loads
- Plane stress and plane strain
- Bilinear square element
- Computer exercises with Abaqus

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows how to use bar elements for calculating displacements and stresses. The student can derive shape functions and stiffness matrices for different types of bar elements.

The student can solve displacements and stresses in different types of structures using the finite element program Abaqus.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows how to use beam elements when analyzing structures.

The student can determine consistent nodal loads for bars, beams and plane elements.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows how to use square elements when calculating displacements and stresses in plane stress.
