Introduction to computers and basics of application softwareLaajuus (5 ECTS)

Objective

Upon completion of the course the student understands the principles of information technology and data processing. S/he is confident in using PCs in her/his studies and knows how to use standard software tools.
The student can work in an IT environment and knows how to meet data security requirements. The student has basic web publishing skills. The student knows the features of spreadsheets and databases to be able to work efficiently as an engineer. He/she is able to apply the more advanced functions of spreadsheet and utilize it in laborations of their subjects. He/she is able to use database program and design small databases.

Content

Information technology and data processing basics. IT environment of the University. Personal computing software. Web publishing. Spreadsheets. Designing and creating database

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

- The student can use computers safely as a tool in her/his line of work in the University environment
- The student can communicate online
- The student is able to produce standard electronic documents.
- The student can use various software tools for simple tasks
- The student is able to create a homepage using simple mark up language
- The student is able to use spreadsheet in exercises
- The student can design and program a database

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Additionally
- The student is familiar with information technology terminology and IT data structures
- The student is able to use software tools for data processing and visualization
- The student demonstrates an ability to learn end users software tools independently.
- The student can use the advanced features of spreadsheet in his/her studies
- The student can create searches from the database as required by the end user

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Additionally
- The student is familiar with information technology terminology and IT data structures
- The student can learn independently and utilize a wide range of software tools.
- The student can apply spreadsheets for various targets by designing his/her own calculating models.
- Calculation results with various conditions can be printed out from the database the student designed
