Objective

The student understands how forces act on particles and rigid bodies. The student can calculate the forces and moments acting on statically determinate particles, rigid bodies and structures.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can calculate centres of gravity for composite bodies.

The student can draw free body diagrams of two dimensional particles and determine forces acting on the particles using equilibrium equations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student can draw free body diagrams of systems of particles and free body diagrams of rigid bodies and determine forces acting on the particles and rigid bodies using equilibrium equations.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student can apply equations of equilibrium to solve the reactions of statically determinate structures and the internal forces between the members of the structures.
