Objective

After completing this course, the student will be able to

- choose appropriate linear actuators for direct loading
- calculate the necessary forces for load-gripping devices and clasps, accounting for friction forces
- design mechanisms for lever arm velocities, accelerations and calculate the forces they are subjected to.
- design mechanisms for accurate motion on a three point trajectory
- design cam mechanisms to obtain a specified motion

Qualifications

Statics, mechanics of materials, dynamics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student will know how to
- solve basic cases correctly. E.g. can calculate adhesion force of a simple fastening mechanism when force and friction are known.
- determine trajectories of simple mechanisms, velocities, acceleration and force.
- design a mechanism that follows a desired trajectory

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student will be able to
- calculate adhesion force of a simple fastening mechanism when force and friction are known.
- determine trajectories, velocities, acceleration and force of multipart mechanisms

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to determine trajectories, velocities, acceleration and force of multipart mechanisms. The student is able to calculate the exact shape of the cam mechanism and velocity and force of its follower
