Osaamistavoitteet

The course focuses on practical assignments and therefore a practical overview of the Contextual Design (C.D.) methodology. Through out the course, students will gain the following knowledge:
- Able to using the "Contextual Design" framework to conduct a human-centered research and design process
- How to apply methods to different types of product development projects
- Can model and consolidate different types of user research data from various sources, and identify the most relevant user-related aspects that affect the design
- Able to give examples of good principles of group working, explain the benefits and principles of idea creation techniques, as well as to use this knowledge in practical designing work.

- Introduction to Contextual Inquiry
- Six models of Contextual Design: sequence model, interaction model, physical model, cultural model, artifact model, personas (They will be introduced selectively)
- Affinity diagram and consolidation
- Idea creation, storyboard method and scenarios to concretize the vision
- User Environment Design and Wireframes
- General principles for design and evaluation
- Contextual design in agile development

Esitietovaatimukset

Basic understanding in software development process.

Motivation for Learning:
To be able to take a responsibility of a small design project, students should have enough experience on the HCD methodology (e.g. contextual inquiries, analyzing data, concepting products, storyboarding, interaction design, UI design). Human-centered design methodology that covers the whole design process and provides the design team a good insight about what the users do, need and want, and how to support them with technology, so it is widely used and applied in both academia and industry.
