Objective

On completion of the course the student knows the basic concepts of radio frequency propagation signal, radio communications and general structure of radio systems. The student understands the construction of the cellular network and knows the GSM system architecture, channels, bursts and call connection and knows the evolution phases of the GSM and GSM data transmission and the fundamentals of 3G and 4G systems.

Radio transmission:
- understands free space propagation and is able to calculate power loss
Radio systems:
- knows the general construction and purpose of radio transmitters and receivers, understands the basics of cellular networks
GSM network and GPRS:
- understands network architectures and interfaces
- knows the basics of GPRS
Fundamentals of 3G and 4G systems:
- knows the basic structure of 3G and 4G networks

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Radio transmission:
- understands the mechanisms of fading and LOS propagation
Radio systems:

GSM network and GPRS:
- knows the function of GSM network sections and the channel structure of the network
- knows GPRS architecture and services
Fundamentals of 3G and 4G systems:
- knows UMTS and LTE services

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Radio transmission:
- understands the effect of multipath propagation and rain attenuation
Radio systems:
- knows the functions of transmitter and receiver blocks
GSM network and GPRS:
- understands the frame structure and bursts, knows the evolution of GSM data transmission
- knows the principles of information security in GSM and other mobile networks
Fundamentals of 3G and 4G systems:
- knows UMTS and LTE architecture and services
