Objective
The students cope in simple everyday, professional, and service related communication situations (such as describing experiences and making invitations) in Japan following the local customs. They can ask for and give basic personal information. They can read and write the 100 most common Kanji characters, use the Hiragana and Katakana characters, and compose simple texts related to their own life. The students identify differences and similarities in contemporary Japanese and Finnish cultures.
Content
The students practise grammatical structures, pronunciation, characters, and listening comprehension, and participate in communicative exercises in pairs and small groups. They enhance their knowledge of Japanese customs and get familiar with contemporary cultural phenomena by analyzing and discussing them.

Qualifications
Japanese 1 or equivalent knowledge.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student can read and write 50% of the 100 most common kanji characters, knows 50% of hiragana and katagana characters, and can write short texts relating to his or her own life. The student manages simple interactions in the everyday and working life and in dealing with service providers.
