Objective
After completing the course the student knows software radio architecture and functions and a principles for sofware radio design. The student understands an operations of software radio RF units and their effects to radio performance. The student knows typical antenna constructions with software radio and is aware of MEMS components applications in SDR. The student knows the development phases for cognitive radio and its general construction and functional characteristics.

After completing the course the student has skills to describe software radio architecture and to explain principles of the different receiver constructions and transmitter frequency conversion methods. The student is able to specify the dynamic range of receiver and to compare effects of antenna, LNA, LO, AGC to receiver functions and operation. The student has skills to form a block diagram for cognitive radio functions and to describe a cognitive radio essential features. The student can compare performance of cognitive radio with other radio types.

Software radio definition, history and development, software radio characteristics, architecture of software radio transmitter and receiver, RF implementation. Cognitive radio definition, architecture and main features.

Software radio analog units, noise significance, signals digital generation, A/D and D/A conversions, multirate signal processing, digital circuits, smart antennas, object oriented radio and network representations, examples of practical software radio constructions.
