Objective

On completion of the course the student knows the basic structures and operating principles of different communication networks.

- Circuit switched and packet switched networks
- Transmission paths
- Line coding, modulation, digital modulation methods
- Theoretical limits of communication due to channel restrictions (noise, bandwidth)
- Mobile network architectures

Introduction to Telecommunications

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Circuit switched and packet switched networks
- Understands the basic characteristics of circuit switched and packet switched networks

Transmission paths
- Knows the different transmission paths and understands their main characteristics

Line coding, modulation, digital modulation methods
- Understands what line coding and modulation mean and how digital information can be transmitted over analog media

Theoretical limits of communication due to channel restrictions (noise, bandwidth)
- Understands how noise and bandwidth affects the transmission capacity

Mobile network architectures
- Understands the main functionalities and structures of mobile networks

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Additionally
- The student understands the main challanges in packet based networks
- The student understands the main characteristics of line coding and modulation and how they affect transmission
- The student knows the main functionalities and structures of mobile networks

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Additionally
- The student understands the main challanges both in optical and wireless communication and how these are taken into account in modern telecommunication
- The student is able to calculate how noise and bandwidth affect the transmission capacity
