Objective
After completion of the course, the student knows the structure and components of a personal computer. The student is able to install the Windows operating system, maintain it, and knows more than just the basic usage. The student can connect the computer securely to the network, install new software, manage typical problems, and can protect the computer from malware. The student is also able to install a typical Linux distribution.
Content
Structure and components of a personal computer. Operating system and its installation. Installation of new software. Malware & viruses, and protecting the computer. Configuration of the user interface, administration and problem solving. Installation of Linux.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
- The student understands the structure of a PC and knows the function of different components.
- The student is able to install the Windows operating system, apply the basic configuration, install a firewall, a virus scanner, an email software and other appropriate programs.
- The student understands the concepts related to files and filesystems, remote management and computer networks.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
- The student knows the PC components and their compatibility, is able to assemble a PC from individual components, can install and update the drivers and use different diagnostic programs.
- The student knows how to install the Linux operating system, set the basic parameters for it and install email client and various other programs.
- The student is able to manage harddisks, printers, various OS settings, Windows Services and updates, firewall & virus scanners, local users and network services provided by the computer.
- The student is able to locate, install and use various programs. He/she is able assess the suitability for different tasks and solve simple software problems.
- The student understands the basic operational principles of computer networks and firewalls including the related terminology. In addition, the student knows the communication paradigms of ordinary programs and is able to carry out PC remote management.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
- The student masters the components of the PC and is able to describe how they work. Understands issues affecting the system performance. Is able to perform a system-wide troubleshooting.
- The student knows the Windows Registry, Group Policies and settings governed by these. If needed, is able to alter the settings and use various tweaking programs.
- The student knows how to solve problems with Windows and with typical software.
- The student masters user accounts, user groups, access rights, filesystem permissions and Windows file sharing.
- The student masters antivirus and firewall programs and is able to test these.
