Objective

Upon completion of this course, the student knows the basics of Bioelectronics and recognizes the main clinical measurements and test amplifiers.

Content

1.ST TERM: Introduction: Contents of the course, course material, defining the scope of the course, nomenclature. Electrical safety: effects of electricity on human tissue, classification of electrical shocks, safety requirements and standards, safety features in equipment, equipment inspections. Bioelectrical phenomena: cell as a voltage source, electrocardiography, electroneuromyography, electroencephalography, electroretinography, electronystagmography and electrotocography. Electrodes: metal/electrolyte junction, surface electrodes, needle electrodes, microelectrodes. Measurement amplifiers: specifications, amplifier types. Input circuits in measurements: disturbances. 2.ND TERM Part I Clinical measurements: Muscle relaxation level measurement: selective anaesthesia, relaxation level measurement possibilities. Blood pressure measurements: non-invasive methods, invasive methods, and distortions to the waveform in invasive measurements. Cardiac output measurement: invasive and non-invasive methods. Blood flow measurements: invasive and non-invasive measurements from veins, plethysmographic measurements from limbs. Use of ultrasound in clinical practice: flow-measurements, imaging, warming, surgery and lithotripsy. Servicing of medical equipment. Part II Use of operational amplifiers: Ideal operational amplifier: ideal model, basic connections. Real operational amplifiers: model of real amplifier, specifications, and basic connections. Choosing of amplifier: standard types. Applications: differential amplifiers, integrator.
