Objective
The student knows the frequency converter drive dimensioning procedure from load torque definition to frequency converter selection.
The student is able to define the static and dynamical loading torque and power of a mechanical system driven by the electrical motor.
The student understands the induction variable frequency operation and is able to select an electrical motor of adequate power and speed rating for the variable speed drive taking into account the load profile and ambient conditions.
The student is able to select an adequate frequency converter, braking chopper and cabling for a motor taking into account the load profile, supply network and ambient conditions.
The contents and the assessment criteria of the course may be different depending on the teacher of the course.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. The student is able to name the steps of a frequency converter drive dimensioning procedure and knows the purpose of those steps.
2. The student knows the interaction of the torque, rotation speed and power. He/she is able to apply this knowledge to calculate the alternating load of an electric motor connected to a gearing.
3. The student knows the induction motor performance limitations in variable frequency operation.
4. The student is able to select an electrical motor for a speed controlled drive taking into account the loading profile and ambient conditions.
5. The student is familiar with the essential criteria for the frequency converter, braking chopper and cable selection.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
In addition to the previous ones
1. The student is able perform the steps of a frequency converter drive dimensioning procedure.
2. The student masters mathematically variable speed drive kinematics and dynamics for rectilinear and circular motion.
3. The student is able to do the dimensioning for an induction motor with different speeds and load profiles taking into account the environmental conditions
4. The student is able to do the dimensioning for the frequency converter, braking chopper and regenerative line inverter.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
In addition to the previous ones
1. The student is able to run a comprehensive analysis on a variable speed drive application dynamics
2. The student knows how to model the thermic behaviour of an induction motor and can estimate the motor heating in different situations
3. The student can independently perform the dimensioning of a frequency converter and motor for different applications.
