Course unit code: TE00AD58

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

The student understands the electrical machine operation principle as a part of an electric drive, is familiar with the ratings and is able to make the motor selection according to the application requirements.

The student is familiar with the rotating machine operation in 4 quadrants and knows how it may be used for process control.

The student is able to use electrical machine equivalent circuits and voltage source model to describe and evaluate electrical machine operation.

The student knows a simplified thermal model and time constants of an electrical machine and is able to use them to define both cyclic and continuous load capacity under varying ambient conditions.

The contents and the assessment criteria of the course may be different depending on the teacher of the course.

Content

1. Electrical machine types, operation and equivalent circuits
2. Rotating electrical machines: motor and generator, 4-quadrant operation
3. Temperature rise in continuous and cyclic operation, short-term overloading
4. Electrical machine selection, ratings, duty types and ambient conditions
5. Power quality influence on electrical machine operation and load capacity

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student is able to explain the electrical machine operation based on equivalent circuits and voltage source model.
2. The student is able to evaluate an electrical machine operation as a motor or generator based on operating conditions. He/she knows how to realize a braking electric drive.
3. The student is able to describe a simplified thermal model of an electrical machine and knows the meaning of time constants for short-term load capacity definition.
4. The student can make the preliminary electrical machine selection based on ratings and the application performance requirements and knows what additional information about the duty type and ambient conditions is relevant for the final selection.
5. The student knows the essential influence of the power quality, voltage level, harmonics and asymmetrical 3-phase network on the electrical machine load capacity.
