Power QualityLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Course unit code: TE00AD48

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

After successful completion of the course, the student knows the most important criteria of power quality, in particular under the standard EN 50160. The student recognizes when the power quality is good enough, and in those cases where it is not, the student knows the most common methods to improve the quality.

Content

1. EN 50160
2. The voltage sags and surges
3. Interrupts
4. Transients
5. Asymmetry
6. Harmonics
7. Measurement technology

Qualifications

Basics of distribution systems
Network Distribution Disturbances

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. Students know the most essential parts of the EN 50160 standard and its importance.
2. Students know the factors influencing the rms voltage changes and their importance for the power user.
3. Students understand in outline the economic meaning of power distribution interruptions from the user's point of view.
4. Students are familiar with the generating mechanisms of transients and the problems caused by transients.
5. Students are familiar with the meaning of the problems caused by asymmetry.
6. Students are familiar with the problems caused by harmonics.
7. The student knows main principles of the power quality measurement technology.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to identify reasons for reduced power quality in the network, and to identify them for further analysis.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows conventional methods to improve the power quality if necessary, as well as is able to design the necessary repair methods.
