Objective
After completing this course the student understands the function of the visual system and the meaning of light for the visual perception. The student is familiar with the basic quantities, units and laws of lighting. The student is able to calculate illuminance values manually in different situations.
The student understands technical documents and product catalogs of the lighting industry. The student knows the quantative and qualitative requirements for good lighting. The student knows the basic light sources and their properties.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. The student is able to describe the visual system.
2. The student is familiar with the basic quantities and units
3. The student is able to estimate the average illuminance by the utility function method.
4. The student is able to calculate luminous intensity from the light distribution curve.
5. The student is able list the factors affecting the quality of lighting.
6. The student is able to calculate the lighting energy consumpion in a classroom.
7. The student is able to rank the common light sources on the basis of their energy effiency.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
1. The student is able describe the structure of the visual system and the effect of age on its performance
2. The student is familiar with the basic quantities and units and their background.
3. The student is able to estimate the average illuminance by the utility function method and calculate it in a specific point by cosine-squere-law.
4. The student is able to calculate the light distribution curve by the help of measured illuminance values.
5. The student is able evaluate the quality of lighting in a work space.
6. The student is able to calculate the lighting energy consumpion in a school building.
7. The student is able to rank the common light sources on the basis of their energy effiency or their colour properties.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
1. The student is able to describe the structure of visual system and the effect of age and adaptive luminance on perception and visual performance.
2. The student is familiar with the basic quantities and units and the reason why they shoud be updated.
3. The student is able to calculate illuminances and luminances in different situations.
4. The student is able to calculate the light distribution curve by the help of measured illuminance values and estimate glare based on calculated values.
5. The student is able to evaluate the quality of lighting in different spaces.
6. The student is able to calculate the LENI-number in different buildings.
7. The student is able to choose in different situations the best possible light source depending on its properties.
