Objective

The student is able to calculate the thermal expansion of solids and liquids. He/she knows the transfer methods of heat. The student is able to solve problems related to heat transfer. The student understands the fundamentals of mechanical oscillation and mechanical wave propagation. He/she is able to apply the interference phenomenon. The student understands the behavior of waves in media interfaces. He/she knows the basics of acoustics.

Content

1. Temperature and its measurement methods, thermal expansion.
2. Thermal energy and its transfer, the transform phenomena of the states of matter.
3. Mechanical oscillations.
4. Mechanical wave propagation. Interference. The behaviour of waves in media interfaces.
5. Acoustics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student is able to calculate the thermal expansion of solids and liquids.
2. The student knows the relation between the velocity, wavelength and frequency of the wave motion.
3. He/she is able to apply the Doppler effect equation.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. As in level 1.
2. The student is able to solve heat transfer problems.
3. The student is able to apply the reflection and refraction laws.
4. The student is able to calculate the sound intensity and the level of sound pressure.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. As in level 3.
2. The student is able to solve calorimeter problems.
3. The student is able to handle the motion of a mechanical oscillator as an alternating motion.
4. The student is able to solve problems in which the interference is either magnifying or attenuating.
