Objective
After completing the course the student is able to
recognize the reasons as to why the serviceability limit state design is performed
list the principles of SLS design
consider the effects of time dependent material factors to the behavior of a structure
work out the deflection of a reinforced beam
calculate the crack width
judge the validity of a structure by SLS design conclusions
explain the significance of the second order effects
study the behavior of a member under simultaneous compression and bending moment
calculate the capacity of a column
calculate the bending moment capacity of a T-shaped cross-section
calculate the capacity of a beam with compressed reinforcement
calculate the capacity of a concrete member under torsion
perform design drawings of ordinary concrete structures

The student is able to
calculate the forces and moments of a structure from tables
determine the creep factor of concrete from EN 1992-1-1 nomogram
determine the final value of drying shrinkage for a concrete member
deal with SLS actions and combine them according to EN 1990 and 1991
estimate the deflection and crack width of a concrete member from tables
determine the capacity of a column from tables

The student is able to
calculate the forces and moments of a multispan beam with rigid supports
determine the creep factor of concrete
determine the time dependency of drying shrinkage
determine the autogenous shrinkage of concrete
deal with SLS actions and combine them according to EN 1990 and 1991

discuss the cracking mechanism of reinforced concrete
discuss the impact of the load history to the behavior of structures
