Course unit code: TR00AD05

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

After completing the course the student is able to
- explain the function of a building frame
- explain the principles of common methods used in lateral stiffening of a building
- work out the actions on the stiffening system of a building
- derive the load distribution on structures of a stiffening system
- design a concrete wall diaphragm and its joints to other structures
- define required tie reinforcement in joints between precast concrete elements
- design concrete structures with no structural reinforcement
- consider the prevention of progressive collapse

Qualifications

Statics 1, Statics 2, Mechanics of Materials, Structural Design 2, Structural Design of Concrete Structures

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to
- list the lateral loads on a building
- explain the principle of distribution of lateral loads
- explain the function of tie-reinforcement
- draw the force and moment diagrams of wall diaphragm
- work out the governing force distribution in wall diaphragm and the stresses from it
- check the capacity of a non-reinforced concrete wall

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
Additionally to the previous criteria:
- define the lateral loads on a building
- define the torsional center of a building stiffening system
- list required tie-reinforcements
- check the stability of a wall diaphragm

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
Additionally to the previous criteria:
- derive the distribution of lateral loads to wall diaphragms
- design tie-reinforcements
- design the anchoring of a wall
- define the force distribution in a structure on flexible supports
