Objective

The students will know the different types of materials, the most important structural materials and their main properties. They will recognise the main factors affecting material properties.

The students will be able to consider the applicability of different material types for a certain need and they will be able to carry out rough material selection.

Content

Atomic structure of materials and its effect on material properties.

Metallic microstructures, deformation and hardening mechanisms of metal alloys. Effect of steel composition and structure on mechanical properties. Main properties of cast irons and aluminium, copper, zinc, titanium, lead and nickel alloys.

General structure of polymers. Structure of thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers and the effect of their structure on properties. General mechanical and thermal properties of polymers. Main factors affecting properties of polymers. Aims of polymer additives.

General properties of ceramics. Factors affecting strength of ceramics.

Atomic structure and main properties and applications of silicon.

Types of composites and their main properties.

Strength, toughness, hardness, impact strength and creep fracture strength of materials. Macrostructure of metals, phase diagrams. Manufacture, heat treating methods, grading and alloying elements of steels. Types of cast iron, plastics and ceramics. Manufacture of polymer products.
