Vapour-phase depositionLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Course unit code: TQ00AB09

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

The student can describe how coatings are formed from the vapour phase. He or she can define the factors affecting the coating properties. He or she can outline the most common vapour-phase deposition methods. The student can present the potential applications and the limitations of vapour-phase deposition. The student shall also adopt basics of vacuum technology.

Content

1. Methods of vapour-phase deposition
2. Structure and properties of deposits
3. Vacuum technology

Qualifications

Introduction to surface treatment
Materials

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student can outline chemical and physical vapour-phase deposition methods.

2. The student can present the basic differences between chemically and physically deposited coatings.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can describe the principal of essential vapour-phase deposition methods.

2. The student can name the equipment needed for achieving different vacuum levels.

3. The student can describe the essential properties of common vapour-phase deposited coatings.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student can describe how the uniformity, adhesion and structure of physical vapour-phase coatings can be affected.

2. The student can describe how the type of a vacuum pump and coating device materials affect the coating quality.
