Course unit code: TQ00AB05

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

After the course the student can define the factors inducing material failures and recognize the characteristics of common failure modes and they can present how the failures can be avoided.

Content

1. Mechanical failures of metals
2. Wear mechanisms
3. Failure mechanisms of polymers
4. Failure mechanisms of ceramics

Qualifications

Materials
Mechanics of Materials
Metals Science and Heat Treatments

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student can define the origin and mechanism of mechanical failures of metal alloys.
2. The student can describe wear mechanisms.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can define the origin and mechanism of failures of polymers and ceramics.
2. The student recognises the essential characteristics of failure types.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student can judge the cause of a material failure according to its appearance and the exposure conditions.
2. The student can define how a certain type of failure can be avoided.
3. The student can define the material properties that increase wear resistance when a certain wear mechanism dominates.
