Objective

The student knows the types of impurities on the surfaces and is able to select a proper cleaning method. The student knows various surface treatment methods and is able to select applicable methods for different substrates. The student can do general measurements for coating quality control and find relevant coating standards.

Content

1. Introduction to pre-treatment methods and their applications
2. Introduction to the paint types, their properties and application methods
3. Familiarization to common metallic coatings and their manufacturing methods

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student identifies proper surface pre-treatment methods and is able to apply them for the project work as instructed and takes work safety and environmental matters into account
2. The student can name various paint types and is able to both describe different application methods and apply them to the project work as instructed taking work safety and environmental matters into account
3. The student can describe various metallic coating types and their properties and is able to apply them to the project work as instructed taking work safety and environmental matters into account

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can choose proper pre-treatment methods and give reasons for the selection. Working area is left clean and in good order after each working session.
2. The student can compare the properties of different paint types and choose a suitable method for application. The project work is planned and implemented according to the plan.
3. The student can choose the proper metallic coatings for the project work and implement them into the project work as planned.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student is well prepared through using versatile sources and scheduling the project work before starting it. The student is able to increase his/her knowledge about pre-treatment methods by doing tests.
2. The student is well prepared for the painting work and is able to increase his/her knowledge by doing tests and comparing the properties of paints and application methods. The work is completed in the planned schedule.
3. The student is well prepared for the surface treatment work and is able to increase his/her knowledge by doing tests and comparing the properties of metallic coatings and their manufacturing methods. The work is completed in the planned schedule.
