Objective

The aim is to be able to describe the structural characteristics of material groups (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites) and deduce the material group of most common structural materials. The student can explain how the essential properties of materials depend on their structure and evaluate the suitability of materials for different operating conditions.

1. The student can describe the structural characteristics of material groups.

1. The student can describe the phase structures and their properties of iron-base alloys.

2. The student can judge how different polymer structures affect the properties.

3. The student recognises ceramic and composite materials and can justify their properties on the basis of their structure.

1. The student can describe the essential properties of carbon and silicon materials.

2. The student can explain how the manufacturing method affects the properties of a ceramic product.
