EcologyLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Objective

Ecological sustainability requires that human activity settles the carrying capacity limits in such a way that the biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are not compromised.
On completion of the course the student will be capable of placing factors altering the environment in a larger frame of reference. He or she will be critical of the destabilizing issues and able to design the environment for sustainable development as required.

Content

The course deals with different materials cycle, species diversity and the significance of a variety of human activities causing pollution. There are global threats to soil, climate and the ecosystem as a whole. Energy is also a key challenge for eco-development.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student realizes the significance of ecology to the community structure and is able to evaluate the relations of a built and natural environment.
