Organic Chemistry, Laboratory CourseLaajuus (3 ECTS)

Course unit code: TG00AA85

General information

Credits
3 ECTS

Objective

After completion of this course the student understands the principles of the following methods and analytical techniques:

-recrystallisation
-(vacuum) distillation
-chromatography (TLC, HPLC, GC)
-polarimetry
-refractometry
-spectroscopy (UV and FTIR-spectroscopy)

In addition, the student knows and understands how to influence the steps, rates and yield of an organic reaction.

After completion of this course the student is able to use glassware, vessels and tools commonly used in practical organic chemistry. He can also apply the important precautions with regard to safety in a laboratory for organic chemistry as well as the ways how to dispose of organic waste. In addition, the student is able to plan and assemble experimental set-ups commonly used in organic synthesis and analysis. He can also qualitatively assess possible sources of error impractical laboratory experiment and is able to use the following equipment:

-a heating device for the determination of melting point
-refractometer
-polarimeter
-FTIR-spectrophotometer
