Objective

On completion of the course the student will be able to: apply academic English writing conventions to his or her own texts, acquire information for academic purposes from relevant English source material; critically evaluate and compare the information and incorporate it into his or her own texts; write an introduction, a conclusion and an abstract and distinguish between them on the basis of their structural and stylistic features; plan, structure and write a short paper in academic style and language on an environmental engineering topic, following the documentation and referencing conventions used in environmental engineering; deliver a professional presentation based on the paper.

- Academic English writing conventions.
- Basic structure of an academic paper.
- Location of relevant English source material, both on-line and printed sources, for use in final year projects and theses in environmental engineering.
- Critical evaluation and use of source material.
- Incorporating information from source material into one’s own texts.
- Documentation and referencing conventions in academic papers and advanced technical documents in environmental engineering.
- Structural and stylistic principles of, and differences between, writing an introduction, a conclusion and an abstract.
- Writing a short academic paper on an environmental engineering topic and presenting it orally.
Receiving feedback on and developing one’s writing and presentation skills.
