Osaamistavoitteet

The student understands what is meant by a function and how it can be applied. The student can interpret graphs of functions. The student understands the concept of the derivative and how it is related to physical, chemical or engineering problems.

The student can form inverse and composite functions. The student is able to visualize elementary functions and typical functions arising in environmental engineering. The student can differentiate functions numerically, analytically and by using mathematical software. The student can solve equations numerically. The student can apply functions and derivatives in describing dependencies in physics, chemistry and environmental engineering.

Sisältö

The concepts of a function, composite function and inverse function. Graphs of elementary functions. Numerical methods for solving equations. Limits of functions. The derivative of a function. Numerical differentiation. Basic differentiation rules. Applications of functions and derivatives in science and environmental engineering. Functions and derivatives in mathematical software.
