Osaamistavoitteet
After completion of this course the student understands both the negative effects of biocatalysts and the probality of these effects and the potential benefits of them. The student knows, how the negative effects can be avoided or minimized as well as how to exploit various biocatalysts. The student is famililar with the properties and reactions of the most important classes of biochemical compounds and knows the principles of biorefineries
After completion of this course the student is able to apply knowledge on microbiology and biochemistry in environmental technology. The student can be a usefull member in teams studying, developing and planning biological methods in environmental engineering.

Biochemistry’s and microbiology’s role in natural systems and in processes, rough classification of organisms and cell theory, appearance of different microbes and their specific properties, identification of microbes, microbial growth and its requirements and kinetics, prevention of microbial growth, procedures in microbiology laboratory, biological processes in environmental technology, chemistry of sugars and carbohydrates and amino acids and proteins, properties and functions and applications of enzymes, biocatalysts and renewable raw materials in the production of energy and chemicals.
The function of biocatalysts and their industrial applications with more details, the classification and naming of enzymes, factors affecting the structure and function of proteins, more detailed understanding of a specific biological application in the field of the degree programme
