Objective
On completion of the course the student will have the knowledge on the basic concepts and equipment of fluid mechanics. The student will be able to apply basic equations of fluid mechanics and to dimension pumps and pipes.
Content
1. The basic concepts and equations in fluid mechanics
2. Equations of continuity and energy balance, dimensionless numbers and their applications in fluid mechanics
3. Pressure losses in pipes; friction and minor losses
4. Piping, vessels and fittings
5. Pumps and dimensioning of pumps
6. Basic concepts and equipment of compress and vacuum technology
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. The student is able to define the basic concepts of fluid mechanics and to solve problems based mainly on inserting a quantity into a formula
2. The student is able to calculate simple problems concerning equations of continuity and energy balance
3. The student is able to calculate the pressure loss of incompressible flow
4. The student is able to size pipes for liquid and gas flows and to select suitable fittings
5. The student is able to dimension a pump according to instructions and is familiar with most common types of pumps
6. The student is able to describe the concepts of compressing and vacuuming and to dimension simple cases
Assessment criteria, good (3)
1. The student is able to define the basic concepts of fluid mechanics and to solve problems
2. The student is able to calculate problems concerning equations of continuity and energy balance
3. The student is able to calculate the pressure loss of incompressible flow and explain the theoretical background of used equations
4. The student is able to size pipes for liquid and gas flows, select suitable fittings and describe principles of dimensioning
5. The student is able to dimension a pump according to process demands and is familiar with types of pumps
6. The student is able to describe the concepts of compressing and vacuuming and to dimension typical cases
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
1. The student is able to define concepts of fluid mechanics and solve and explicate problems
2. The student is able to calculate problems concerning equations of continuity and energy balance and critically review the outcome of the calculations
3. The student is able to calculate the pressure loss of incompressible flow and derive the used equations
4. The student is able to size and optimize pipes for liquid and gas flows and select appropriate fittings
5. The student is able to dimension a pump and optimize it according to process demands. Student knows types of pumps
6. The student is able to describe the concepts of compressing and vacuuming, dimension typical cases and evaluate related dimensioning problems
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student does not sufficiently master or value knowledge of his or her own study field, and he or she lacks sufficient knowledge or ability to use the concepts of his or her study field.
