Objective

On completion of the course the student knows the most important fundamental concepts of modern telecommunication. The student masters the terminology of telecommunications so that he or she is able to follow the development of the area and search additional information about it. On completion of the course the student also knows the basic structures and operating principles of different communication networks.

Content

1. Standards and OSI and TCP/IP reference models
2. Basic concepts of transmission
3. Signals and their basic properties, time and frequency domain, signal levels, link budget
4. Transmission paths and radio communication
5. Line coding, modulation, digital modulation methods
6. Protocols

Qualifications

Courses on Basic Electronics and Engineering Mathematics.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

- Understands the purpose of OSI and TCP/IP reference models
- Understands the basic properties of signals in both time and frequency domain
- Understands what a link budget means and the definition of decibel
- Knows the different transmission paths and understands their main characteristics
- Understands what line coding and modulation mean and how digital information can be transmitted over analog media
