General information
- Credits
- 3 ECTS
Objective
Upon completion of the course the student will understand vehicle dynamics and its enviromental impact on a vehicle engine and transmission dimension, user safety, economy and drivability.
Content
1. Resisting force directed at a vehicle and how to calculate the extent
2. Car movements' impact on car dynamics (acceleration, breaking, cornering).
3. Relationship between engine, transmission and necessary acceleration, and the energy required
4. Driving resistance drawing
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1. The student knows the various forces affecting a moving car
2. The student knows how to calculate theoretical axle loads of a vehicle while braking normally.
3. The student knows how to calculate a vehicle's traction when values for engine and transmission are known.
4. The student can draw a basic gear ratio chart according to a model.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
1. The student can calculate the forces a car has to overcome in order to move when the constraining conditions are known.
2. The student can calculate loads affecting wheels in curves and can show what can cause a car to slide or overturn, using mathematically simplified examples. The student can also calculate stress loads affecting the car.
3. The student understands how changes in power, speed of rotation and torsional moment affect wheel traction at any point.
4. The student can draw a gear ratio chart independently and calculates output utilizing literature.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
1. The student is able to explain how the dynamic forces are formed and how to manipulate them
2. The student knows how to calculate the (negative) gradient driving through a curve affects on the wheel load of a car.
3. The student knows how to calculate CO2 emissions on the basis of a vehicle's and engine's characteristics in various driving conditions
4. The student is able to asses raw data. The student can analyse if an engine and transmission is appropriate for various driving conditions
