• The student knows what cast irons are.
• The student is familiar with the commonly used steels.
• Knows why stainless steels do not corrode.
• Knows the common properties of aluminium alloys.
• Understands the difference between thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics.

1. The student knows the different types of cast irons and the commonly used stainless steels.
2. The student is able to explain why high strength steels are used in automotives.

1. The student knows what the principles of aluminium hardening and its influence on mechanical properties
2. Knows the most important technical plastics and their use.
