Objective

After the course the student:
Will be familiar with material science terminology.
Knows the most important characters and differences for material groups.
Knows the most important deformation and strengthening mechanisms.
Knows the basics of optical microscopy, its limitations and sources of error. Is able to do sample preparation, optical microscopy and hardness measurements. Is able to do materials research and analyze, and report.

1. Microstructure of metallic materials
2. Phase diagrams
3. Iron-Carbon phase diagram
4. Microstructures of steel
5. Deformation, work hardening
6. Tensile testing, hardness measurement, microstructure examination.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

• Understands crystal nature of metals.
• Understands the effect of temperature for metals phases.
• Knows the most important alloying elements of steels.
• Knows how hardening, quench and tempering are made.
• Has participated in laboratory exercises.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

• Understands crystal nature of metals and can explain how plastic deformation occurs.
• Understands the effect of temperature for metals phases and knows how temperature effects the crystals structure.
• Knows the most important alloying elements of steel
• Knows how hardening, quench and tempering are made and their effect on mechanical properties.
• Has participated in laboratory exercises.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. Understands how crystal structure affects the mechanical properties.
2. Understands the effect of temperature for metals phases and knows how temperature effects the crystals structure.
3. Knows the most important alloying elements of steel and is able to clarify via phase diagram how steel’s microstructure changes in slow cooling.
4. Knows how hardening and quench and tempering are made and their effect on mechanical properties.
5. Can prepare metallurgical specimen and make hardness measurements without guidance. Is able to analyse microstructures with an optical microscope.
