Objective

The student knows the temperature scales and the most important methods of temperature measurements.
The student knows the fundamental laws of thermal physics and understands their limitations and meaning in technology.
The student knows the origin and properties of mechanical vibrations and waves and is able to apply this information in automotive technology.

Content

1. Basic concepts of thermal physics and their applications: temperature and thermometers, thermal expansion, heat, phase changes, ideal gas law, transfer of heat.
2. Harmonic oscillations and waves.
3. Reflection and refraction of light, total internal reflection.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student is familiar with the most important temperature scales and methods for measuring temperature. She or he can calculate thermal expansion for one dimensional system. She or he can also calculate heat changes for systems without phase changes. The student knows different ways for heat transfer.
2. The student recognizes harmonic force, and is able to calculate the characteristic parameters in different mechanical oscillatory motions.
3. The student can use Snell’s law in simple applications.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can determine thermal expansion of different body shapes and calculate changes in thermal energy in systems having phase changes. She or he is able to use ideal gas equation in simple changes of state and calculate energy changes in different heat transfer processes.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student can treat the effects of thermal expansion in different materials and constructions. She or he can calculate heat changes and apply ideal gas law in different systems and changes of state. The student is able to evaluate the significance of different heat transfer mechanisms and calculate heat changes related to radiation.
