Objective

After finishing the course the student is familiar with the causes of electromagnetic interference, the coupling methods of interference and is able to design countermeasures. The student can evaluate the effects of grounding, shielding and filtering. The student is familiar with mainline EMC standards and legislation.

Content

1. Static and dynamic fields.
2. Dielectric strength.
3. Sources, coupling and forms of electromagnetic interference.
4. Grounding, shielding and filtering.
5. Legislation, standards and measurements.

Qualifications

Basic Electronics 1 and 2.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student understands the basic concepts of interference sources and coupling mechanisms and the common shielding mechanisms.
2. The student understands the meaning of dielectric strength in the concept of electric safety.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student can calculate simple EMC protection sizing problems.
2. The student is familiar with Maxwell’s equations and their importance in electromagnetics.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student knows and can size the most used EMC protection measures and knows on the general level the most important EMC standards and can review them to find information.
2. The student can perform simple calculations in electromagnetic field theory.
