Objective

The student gains a wide understanding of different applications of keyboard instruments, the MIDI language, and information technology in music making and music education. The course also includes programming work associated with hardware and software-based forms of sound synthesis.

Content

- History of electronic and computer-aided music
- Operational principles of electronic keyboard instruments
- Different forms of synthesizing
- The history of MIDI language, MIDI programming
- Basics of notation

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• has participated in class
• understands keyboards, and various applications of the language of MIDI and information technology in music and music education
• has completed the agreed exercises

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition, the student:
• is familiar with the history of electronic and computer-based music
• understands the operating principles of electronic keyboards, as well as various forms of sound synthesis
• understands the basics of using notation software

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition, the student:
• is familiar with the language of MIDI, and its history and functionality
• is able to do programming work independently, utlizing forms of hardware and software audio synthesis

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student:
• has participated in class
• understands keyboards, and various applications of the language of MIDI and information technology in music and music education
• has completed the agreed exercises
