Objective

The student is familiar with modern instruments and the most common orchestra and band ensemble line-ups, and learns the basic skills needed for reading musical scores.

- Introduction to modern instruments and their special characteristics
- Instrument timbres, registers, and transpositions
- Common orchestra and band line-ups
- Introduction to typical instrument sections and combinations
- Fundamentals of score reading
- Necessary terminology

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:

• is familiar with modern musical instrument timbres, registers, and transpositions
• knows the most common orchestral and band configurations
• knows the fundamentals of score reading
• is familiar with appropriate terminology

• is very familiar with modern musical instrument timbres, registers, and transpositions
• has good knowledge of the most common orchestral and ensemble configurations
• has good knowledge of the fundamentals of score reading
