Objective

The student gains facilities for writing for larger ensembles (such as big bands) and is able to compose and/or arrange small-scale works for instrumental and vocal ensembles of different sizes.

- Practical information for working life
- Definition of atmosphere and style
- Treatment of rhythm, melody and harmony
- Orchestration
- Elements of form (introductions, interludes, modulations, tutti choruses, shout choruses, codas)
- Thematic sections and background elements
- Planning and sketching an arrangement
- Score writing

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• has participated in lessons as agreed
• has done the required exercises
• can work independently
• can write for big band (five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and a rhythm section) using basic techniques
• has made the score and parts for the final arrangement satisfactorily

The student:
• has participated in lessons as agreed
• has done the required exercises
• can work independently
• can write for big band (five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and a rhythm section) using basic techniques
• has made the score and parts for the final arrangement well

The student:

• has done the required exercises
• can work independently
• can write for big band (five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and a rhythm section) using basic techniques
• has used big band extensively in the final arrangement
• has made the score and parts for the final arrangement clearly and according to common practices
• has returned the final arrangement by the given deadline

Further information

Qualificatons: The student is able to write an elementary arrangement for a modern big band and produce a written score of the arrangement plus parts for the individual instruments.
