Objective

The student has the basic technical skills to write the melody, harmony and the form of pop/jazz music. He/she is able to write large and stylistic correct musical forms.

Content

– Form (motive, phrase, sentence, song form)
– Four- and five-part sectional harmony
– Five- and six-part sectional cluster harmony
– Harmony with superimposed chords – ‘Tutti-harmony’
– Advanded harmonization and reharmonization
– Slash-chords
– Harmonization with slash-chords
– Melody and styles of accompaniment
– Counter melody

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• has participated in class
• has completed the agreed tasks
• is able to work independently
• has mastered standard forms
• is capable of harmonizing challenging melodies with chord symbols
• is capable of challenging reharmonization with chord symbols
• is able to write four, five and six part sectional harmony
• is able to write a broad range of harmony
• is able to write a melody independent of counter melody
• is able to write a melody made up of elements from different background styles, according to accompaniment
