Goals
Today, theatre professionals face new expectations. In addition to traditional theatre skills, people are expected to be competent in applying drama to different areas of life. In addition, drama and theatre are generally seen as a meaningful tool for understanding the surrounding society as well as personal experiences.
The Degree Programme in Performing Arts (Drama Instructor) presents a new educational approach that emphasises research and dialogue. The professional competence acquired during the studies focuses on the theatre: scriptwriting, directing and performing. Studies specialising in directing provide a broad understanding of the processing methods of theatre and drama, and prepare drama instructors for artistic theatre work, community theatres, expressive pedagogy, research through theatre and participatory theatre.
The degree programme prepares students to work as directors in different contexts, and provides tools ranging from the foundations and traditions of theatre to the most innovative processing methods. The core studies of the first two years are divided into theatre work (60 cr) and applied drama (36 cr). The studies emphasise collaborative methods and a research-oriented approach. Different aspects of theatre work are examined from the director's perspective, and learning takes place through personal experience and own work.
After the core studies, students plan their third- and fourth-year studies to support their selected area of specialisation. During the specialising studies, students further develop their professional competence in one of the following areas: community, pedagogy, performance or research. The specialising studies are comprised of optional projects, such as workshops, fieldwork and work placement projects. The studies focus on different aspects and variations of directing, as well as on improving students' dramaturgical and performing skills. In addition, students further their understanding of applied drama as required by their area of specialisation. Where applicable, students can include different elements in their third- and fourth-year studies in the joint projects arranged between music, media and the performing arts.
