Objective
After completing this course:
- Student will know the effects of various cleaning agents and cleaning methods, and she/he will be able to apply the knowledge in practical conservation.
- Student will know the properties of various tensides, detergents and solvents, and their use in textile conservation.
- Student will be able to carry out an appropriate cleaning treatment.
- Student is able to use her/his knowledge in chemistry in practical conservation cleaning.
- Student is able to test and choose enzymes and bleaching agents applicable in conservation use.
Content
- Conservation cleaning and chemistry of cleaning in water and solvent based cleaning process.
- Properties of tensides and detergents and their testing.
- Use of solvents in textile conservation/solubility parameters.
- Use of enzymes in textile conservation – theory, use and practise.
- Use of bleaches in textile conservation – theory, use and practise.
- Stain removal in textile conservation.
- Use of poultices and gels in textile cleaning.
