Conservation of Industrial Heritage, Modern and Contemporary ArtLaajuus (15 ECTS)

Objective

The course will contain multiple project-type modules.
The main aim of the course is to give the student a broader view to the problematic areas in conservation of industrial heritage and modern industrial materials and modern and contemporary art. The course also aims to develop problem-solving skills which are part of conservation of industrial heritage and modern and contemporary art. The objective is also to point out the importance of the working life connections as part of solving these issues.
The aim of the course module Conservation of Modern and Contemporary Art is to introduce the student to the elements, concepts, philosophy and materials (especially plastics) in modern and contemporary art. Students are also introduced to the existing documentation methods and preventive conservation in modern and contemporary art.

Content

During the course module Conservation of Modern and Contemporary Art, the student will get the basic introduction into modern and contemporary art through theory and practical case-study based conservation work, including suitable documentation techniques. The course also includes a module on modern materials (plastics).
The artist interview, documentation and ethics in modern and contemporary art are part of the course (data and condition registration models).
One of the course modules concentrates on the history, manufacturing and techniques, aging, and conservation problems of modern furniture materials.
The course also includes visits to the storage areas and conservation studios of the museums with modern and contemporary art collections as well as possible other visits.

Kokonaisuus ei ole tasapainoinen. Opiskelija ei täysin pysty hahmottamaan konservoinnin perusideoita eikä sen vuoksi pysty täysin soveltamaan oppimaansa käytännön työhön. Toimenpiteiden ja materiaalivalintojen perustelut ovat haparoivia ja puutteita ilmenee aikaisemmin opitun tiedon osalta.
Dokumentoinnin tekstissä ja / tai lisämateriaalissa paljon puutteita ja epätarkkuutta, pieniä asiavirheitä. Käytännön konservoinnin osalta kokonaisuus on huolimaton. Kaikkia konservoinnin toimenpiteitä ei ole suoritettu eettisesti ja esteettisesti hyväksyttävästi, työskentely ei ole ollut itsenäistä ja on ollut paljon tarvetta lehtorin lisäohjaukselle konservointiprosessin ja dokumentoinnin aikana. Kokonaisuus on sellainen josta näkyy, että siihen ei ole paneuduttu kunnolla.

Hyvä ja tasapainoinen kokonaisuus. Asiat etenivät opintojaksolla johdonmukaisesti. Opiskelija hahmottaa opintojaksolla opetetut konservoinnin perusideat ja osaa soveltaa oppimaansa käytännön työhön sekä osaa selittää asiantuntevasti tehtyjen toimenpiteiden ja materiaalien valinnat, syyt ja seuraukset.
Dokumentoinnissa sallitaan vain pientä epätarkkuutta mutta ei asiavirheitä. Käytännön konservoinnin osalta kokonaisuuden tulee olla onnistunut ja työ on kiitettävää tasoa. Konservoinnin toimenpiteet on suoritettu eettisesti ja esteettisesti hyväksyttävästi, työskentely on ollut riittävän itsenäistä mutta on ollut tarvetta lehtorin lisäohjaukselle konservointiprosessin ja dokumentoinnin aikana.

The student has restricted knowledge or has not coherently demonstrated theoretical and methodological insight. The capacity to formulate the relevant problems associated with the work is limited, little independence and critical evaluation is demonstrated. The analysis, documentation and interpretation are performed in a less satisfactory manner. The structure of the work is unclear and the application of terminology, language and references inadequate. Where relevant the practical work is below a satisfactory standard or insufficient.
